About the Instructor


Prior to founding OCTEK Inc. Tony Orlando worked 18 years as an electrical engineer for Control Data Corporation, a Minneapolis based mainframe manufacturer.  He has been involved in the computer industry for more than 30 years. While working on his Bachelor of  Science degree in Electronics and Computer Sciences, at LSSU, Tony had the opportunity to install and configure the college's first experimental  IBM 1401 mainframe computer (a real dinasour by today's standards). He helped maintain and administer services on this computer that was also used for computer programming development and general administrative work.

At Control Data, Tony started as a field customer engineer in 1972 and later taught field engineers the theory and maintenance techniques required to maintain Control Data's large scientific mainframes. He spend 8 years working for the Advanced Computer Developement Division of Control Data as a design team leader and later a manager of Continuation Engineering. His primary responsibillity was to act as liaison between the Developement and, Manufacturing Divisions of Control Data and the many world wide customers. Other responsibilities at Control Data included the hosting of monthly meetings between customers, field and design engineers, ensuring a quick resolution to critical problems, as well as ensuring that engineers had latest technological tools to work with.

After leaving Control Data, Tony worked for 2 years as a full time instructor at a well know college, teaching Unix programming, COBOL, Pascal, and Visual Basic.

In 1988, Tony founded OCTEK Inc. a company whose primary mission was to sell, install, and maintain PC hardware and network equipment and services. During this period he has also been involved in training. He has developed and delivered several computer seminars and courses on, PC for Users, PC Troubleshooting and PC  for the Technically Oriented in centers throughout Canada and the US. On a part time basis, Tony also teaches engineering and technology courses at several community colleges, through their Continuing Education departments.

Tony is an active member of IEEE (Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers) . Some of his hobbies include, flying, biking, music and travel.
